Join us as we take you to the Octagon Hall Museum. The antebellum Octagon Hall was built by Andrew Jackson Caldwell in Franklin Kentucky. It is said that he began construction in 1847 and finished around 1859. Allegedly Caldwell built the Octagon shaped house because he didn’t like the traditional style of that time. Being a Mason, he included many other symbols and likings to the Free Masons such as doorways due East and West with windows due North and South. Masons that have visited the Hall claim that Caldwell built a Spirit Trap in the octagon shaped home and the Museum personnel agree as it has proven to be quite haunted with many Spirits. On February 13, 1962, the Confederate Soldiers in the Civil War fled Bowling Green. Let by John Caldwell, Andrew’s nephew, 9,000 soldiers came to Octagon Hall and took refuge for 2 days. It became a hospital for the wounded. The dirt basement floor became soaked with blood and many amputated limbs along with deceased were buried on the property. After 2 days, the men took their soldiers onward to Shiloh and Nashville. 5,000 soldiers from the Union Army then descended upon the Hall for several weeks wreaking havoc on the injured confederates left behind along with the slaves and family. Andrew’s first wife Elizabeth died just before the house was completed and is buried in this family cemetery out back. Two of their children, Mary Elizabeth and Andrew, are buried here with their mother. Andrew then married Harriet who he had many children with. He passed in 1866 only 12 years after getting married the second time. He was buried in the family cemetery. Harriet left the hall before passing. She then had Andrew’s body removed from the family cemetery to be buried with her so he wouldn’t spend eternity with his first wife. Caldwell allowed his slaves to have some land to bury their own. There are several buried there along with three that Andrew allegedly fathered with one of the slaves. There are also two unknown confederate soldiers buried there.
