북러회담 분석 The long-anticipated summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended just a few hours ago. At the start of the banquet following the summit, the two leaders shared friendly messages, reaffirming their long tradition of close ties. But during a press briefing which was held soon after the banquet, Putin sounded as if Russia was leaning slightly over Washington's side intead of Pyeongyang's. To discuss further on today's big meeting we're joined by Arirang's foreign ministry correspondent, Lee Ji-won and Dr. Go Myong-hyun of Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Ji-won, I wanna start with you first. Could you tell us a bit more about who was at the extended summit besides the leaders of North Korea and Russia? Well Daeun, on the North Korean side, it was just Kim Jong-un, his translator, foreign minister Ri Yong-ho and vice foreign minister Choe Son-hui. Considering the fact that only the foreign affairs officials were with Kim in this expanded meeting, and not the military general and or top party officials that accompanied Kim during his travel to Vladivostok ,… that could be a hint that Kim wanted to focus today on their talks with the U.S. Another hint in the Russian delegation -- it consists of numerous figures related to the economy and transportation, including the CEO of Russia's railways and its transportation minister. So that could point to how the Russians may have wanted to focus on joint economic projects. Could you give us some examples of what these economic projects might be? Well, Alexander KOZLOV, the Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East, met with North Korean officials last month and mentioned their efforts to build a road for cars across the Tumen river. Currently there's only a railway, and this is something the two sides had been discussing since 2015. Kozlov had also said last month, that they discussed the issue of North Korean workers in Russia. UNSC 23-97 orders member states to expel North Korean laborers working in their countries by December of 2019. But cheap North Korean labor is a great asset for the Russians in developing the Far East,… so they could have discussed ways to help the remaining 10-thousand North Korean workers keep their jobs in Russia. But all of these projects risk violating the UN sanctions that forbid countries from leaking cash into the regime,... so we're going to have to wait and see how that develops. Now I want to turn to you Dr.Go... A press briefing was held you analyse the outcome of the summit? No Joint statement, or agreement was officially announced. Why? On Putin's side, it appears the Russian president has put more focus on economy this time, as his delegation consists of officials specializing in economy. How do you see this? The big question was how much political or economic suppport is Russia willing to provide to its old ally. It's widely believed that Russia's offers will be limited due its international obligations. What's your take? Russia, a veto wielding member of the UN Security Council, has previously supported North Korea's step-by-step approach to denuclearization, saying that sanctions must be lifted according to North Korea's denuclearization steps. Do you think Kim Jong-un will be able to reconfirm that support this time? Going back to you Ji-won. The world is zooming in on every step of Kim Jong-un. What are some of Kim's schedule in Russia that we need to look out for besides the summit? Yes, the North Korean leader when in other countries, is known for visiting industrial sites and tourist destinations. So there's a high possibility that he might do the same this time as well. And so, a number of possible destinations that have come up include the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, a public aquarium, and a local milk or chocolate factory in the area. Some of these places,... including the Pacific Fleet headquarters were also visited by Kim's protocol chief Kim chang-son earlier on. Kim could also follow the footsteps of his late father, Kim Jong-il, by visiting the places he went,… including a bread factory. And because there are many North Korean exchange students studying at the Far Eastern Federal University,… there is also a possibility that Kim could speak to them,… which would be a chance for him to be seen as a leader of a normal state.
