Irene Judith Matta was educated
Irene Judith Matta was educated in a Protestant seminary. Even though she rejects Sola Scriptura, she thinks like a Protestant. She is not a good theologian. Further, her accusation that the toll-houses and the story of Basil the New and Theodora is myth, is similar to the arguments of the non-Orthodox heretic, Rudolph Bultmann, who wanted to "demythologize" the Bible, and the liberal view of destructive higher biblical critics. These attitudes are foreign to the Orthodox Christian ethos. Irene Matta strikes me as someone who wants to reinvent Orthodoxy. The attitude of reinventing Christianity was common in the 20th century, as we see in such books as "Reinventing Jesus," by Komoszewski, and the liberal Jesus Seminar. Irene Matta is of bad will and doesn't engage the overwhelming evidence refuting her position.

Canon 19 of the Council of Trullo forbids Christians from interpreting the Bible contrary to the interpretation of the Church Fathers. The Church Fathers believed that the Bible teaches the Toll-Houses. We must be humble and obedient to their God-illumined insights and canon 19 of Trullo. Through our obedience we keep unity in the Church.

I want to encourage Irene Matta and the enemies of Church teaching to stop the lies, slander, disinformation and logical fallacies. A Christian should hold to the correspondence view of truth, which says something is true if it corresponds to reality. Irene's teaching against the toll-houses does not correspond to patristic and Church reality.
