The Price of Eggs by Randall Garrett -Vintage SciFi Novelette Short Story Audiobook human voice

This novelette is a somewhat light-hearted take on the Earthmen-getting-unwittingly-caught- up-in-strange-native-deadly-customs trope. Our viewpoint character is a troubleshooter sent to the planet Dynak where the very human-seeming but alien, matriachal natives who are the only source of a very important medical drug Earth cannot do without, have married a human diplomat to the princess. The trouble lies in the native law concerning if the happy couple do not beget fertilized eggs, the husband is to be killed to make room for a new husband...and since humans are simply not compatible with the natives that way, the diplomat has a very short life expectancy... so how to salvage both the diplomat and the vital drug deliveries when they only have a few days to do it?

A fun romp reminiscent of both the Stainless Steel Rat stories and Retief, in terms of finding clandestine, high tech ways around the laws of the land, delivered with Garretts trademark easy prose.

Randall Garrett (1927-1987) was a prolific SF and F writer and, it seems, a bit of a ladies’ man. He was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards several times, and posthumously given the Sidewise Award for Alternate History Special Achievement Award for his series of Fantasy stories centered around his character of Lord Darcy.
