Diagnosing Another Junk PS Vita

Yeah, I have a problem, I know. I bought this Vita knowing full well that it was completely busted. I figured (hoped) that it would be salvageable though. I figured it would need a new LCD and as such, I did already order one. However, due to the halt on outgoing shipments in China (first for the holiday, then for the virus) it's still going to be a while before I get the parts I need.

As it turns out, this Vita was in much better shape than I had anticipated. It still needs a new screen but it looks like ALL of the electronics are perfectly functional. I still do need to test the analog sticks and the battery capacity but once I get the new screen in, I should have a better idea of the remaining parts I need to purchase. I think I might just get new sticks anyway because of how chewed up these ones are.

After filming, I ended up ripping the touch screen off the console. It actually came off pretty easily and is the reason that this one was broken in the first place. The previous owner had tried removing it and had instead ripped off half of the OLED and all the ribbon cables that connect the display and the touch panel. That explains why the screen looked the way it did and the fact that the touch panel did not work.

It took a few hours to clean up the leftover adhesive. I spent that time watching netflix. The process was largely just scraping with a flathead screwdriver (yeah it scratches the plastic underneath but that will be invisible once the new panel is in place) and using goof-off adhesive remover to soften the stuff up. Once I got the majority of the adhesive, I just ran a microfiber cloth saturated in rubbing alcohol over the whole thing and got the goof-off cleaned up. It came out pretty nicely.

I also took the time to clean up the rest of the unit. That was just countless cotton swabs with rubbing alcohol. It was gross. The buttons I did with soap, warm water, and a toothbrush.

Now I just need to wait for the new parts.
