Paint with a pencil?  You sure can AS LONG AS it is water soluble.  (It will say on the pencil or on the pencil packaging, mine is called a sketch and wash pencil made by Generals) Painting aspen birch trees has never been easier.  All you do is paint the area where you want the tree trunk to be with water, sand some pencil into the painted area and use your brush to paint across the tree trunk to create the texture of bark.  Once the under layer is dry it is permanent.  You can layer darker areas on top.  You could also use this technique under watercolors, and layer other mediums on top.   This tutorial will also explain why pencil sets come with sand paper.  Enjoy!

Supplies
Sketch and wash pencil (water soluble pencil or a watercolor pencil)
Watercolor Paintbrush (I am using a size 10 round)
Watercolor paper (it works much better on this paper)
Water in a container
Paper Towel
Scratch piece of paper
