Carrie Sheffield wrote her book,
Carrie Sheffield wrote her book, "Motorhome Prophecies" to share a story of hope and reconciliation, and she presents the robust scientific evidence for faith strengthening mental health and preventing suicide and drug/alcohol overdoses.
Carrie grew up with a mentally ill, street musician father who believed he was a modern-day Mormon prophet. Forced to live as vagabonds, she and her 7 biological siblings and their mother often stayed in motorhomes, sheds, and tents. She suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Despite attending 17 schools, performing music, and distributing religious pamphlets, she overcame her father's toxic beliefs. Through forgiveness developed after her Christian baptism, Carrie evolved from a scared, motorhome-dwelling girl to a Harvard-educated professional, driven to empower others. Carrie was glad to share her story with Ashley Key on The 700 Club on April 17, 2024.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention late last year released provisional data showing 49,449 people committed suicide in the United States in 2022. This nearly 3% increase from 2021 is the highest number ever recorded and the highest rate since 1941–the aftershocks of the Great Depression.
People attending weekly religious services are significantly less likely to die from “deaths of despair”—suicide, drug overdose, and alcohol poisoning, according to research led by Harvard University’s School of Public Health. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found states with pronounced drops in religious attendance correlated with sharper upticks in deaths of despair, and vice versa. A literature review appearing in Psychiatric Times reported, “Of 93 observational studies, two-thirds found lower rates of depressive disorder with fewer depressive symptoms in persons who were more religious.”
