Mate Wayne Stacey of SS Ship 198 Eagle Milton, Delaware LCDR USCG Ret. explains and demonstrates the four basic sounds made by the bosun's call.

Notes:
There are many commonly seen spellings and names for the device the gentleman in the video is blowing. I am using the same spelling as was used on the DVD. Several commenters have suggested the Blue Jacket's Manual for more information on how to sound the boatswain's call. In pursuing these suggestions I have acquired 1944 and 2004 editions of that fine book, and while it may have a fantastic amount of useful information (Every Sea Scout Skipper should have a copy to supplement the Sea Scout Handbook) neither edition contains information on how to sound the boatswain's call.
