Learn how to achieve a hand-rubbed finish from Bruce Johnson. A hand-rubbed oil finish is one of the easiest finishes because it doesn't require a brush. A hand-rubbed finish dates back centuries and is still a good, durable finish to apply to your furniture. The first step in applying a hand-rubbed finish to furniture is to use an oil that will soak deep into the wood like Minwax Tung Oil Finish. If you want a stronger finish, apply Minwax Wipe-On Poly. For your first coat, saturate the wood with the oil and give it about 5 minutes to soak into the wood before wiping off the excess with a rag. Let the first coat dry for 2 to 4 hours. For the second coat, reapply the Minwax oil to the wood with a fine steel wool applicator. The heat from the steel wool will work the oil deeper into the pores of the wood, and that is where you want the oil to dry and harden. Wipe off the excess oil after about 5 minutes and let it dry. When the wood is dry to the touch, reapply a third and final coat of Minwax oil using number 400 or 600 sandpaper as your applicator pad. Sand the finish into the wood, which is going to drive the oil into the pores and smooth out the existing wood finish. Five minutes later, wipe off the excess oil and let it dry. You will have a perfect hand-rubbed wood finish. For more tips on how to finish wood, visit minwax.com.
