Drake Passage - really that scary?

Drake Passage is a 600 mile body of water that lies between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica. It is notorious for its treacherous and changeable weather conditions, so it's impossible to know when planning a cruise there whether you will experience "Drake Lake" - a calm crossing or "Drake Shake" - windy and stormy conditions.
