On August 9th, 2023 at 5:34 a.m., the Bonn fire brigade was alerted to an accident between a Stadtbahn of the Cologne transport company KVB and a bus near the Friesdorf depot.
Upon arrival, it turned out that a 46-year-old bus driver coming from the company premises wanted to cross the B9 to continue his journey in the direction of Bad Godesberg, taking the KVB Stadtbahn, which was driven by a 59-year-old driver was traveling in the direction of Bonn, collided, causing the front of the train to derail and stuck around half a meter inside the bus.
The bus was pushed several meters over the track bed and badly damaged.
The passengers, numbering between 5 and 20, were all unharmed.
To ensure safe working, the contact wire was switched off and the lines grounded.
In order to separate the vehicles that were wedged into each other, parts of the bus had to be dismantled using hydraulic shears and spreaders. In addition, the track was lifted out of the ballast bed with hydraulic jacks. The train was then able to reset itself. A first attempt to move the track with a recovery vehicle from the public utility company was unsuccessful in the morning. The train was finally lifted back onto the tracks by the KVB crane. The badly damaged bus was recovered from Königswinter by the towing and recovery service Zurstrassen and driven back to the depot.
The accident recording was supported by the use of a drone by the police.
The responsible traffic commissariat has taken over the further investigations into the course of events, which resulted in property damage estimated at several 10,000 euros.
During the rescue, salvage and accident recording work, Godesberger Allee was completely closed at times.
The railway line was closed until around 5:15 p.m. A replacement rail service between Olaf-Palme-Allee and Stadthalle was set up, but was also temporarily blocked.
The police punished several cases in which photographs were taken from vehicles.
At least the A, B and press service, the fire-fighting units LE 3, 31, the rescue unit rail with the rescue vehicles, the water rescue equipment vehicle, two personnel carriers, one emergency doctor vehicle, two ambulances, one patient transport vehicle, four radio patrol vehicles, the test vehicle, the criminal investigation department 31, a radio vehicle and the accident assistance vehicle.
At around 7:30 a.m., the security guards at the scene were relieved.
The LE 12 occupied fire station 1 and the LE 31 the 3.
