An enthralling day of Test cricket ends with both results still possible despite India being much in the driver's seat. The day started with Anderson nipping out Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal. Shubman Gill then steadied the ship stitching together partnerships with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel as he found some form again. He was sketchy to start off but grew in the innings and ended up scoring his 3rd Test hundred.

Some inventive captaincy from Ben Stokes who kept changing fields and posing new challenges to the batters helped get Gill's wicket. Following that the rest of the Indian team folded pretty easily as England's inexperienced spinners gave a good account of themselves with Root out injured for most of the day. India set a daunting target of 399 for the visitors out of while England have knocked off 67 runs. A positive start from Crawley and Duckett but the later fell in Ashwin's first over. The pitch is still fairly decent to bat on although there is some variable bounce now.

Gill: Definitely very pleased but I left a bit out there to be honest. The first one I didn't feel it (inside edge onto pad). Shreyas told me to take it in case it's umpire's call. I saw the point fielder go there and I thought it was a percentage shot. Should've just played the 5-6 overs till tea. Pretty decent wicket to bat on.

Not an easy kind of wicket to hit on the rise. Have to apply yourself because the odd one is turning and odd one is keeping low. I think so (getting pulled up by his father for that shot that got him out). I'll get to know once I get back to the hotel but I think so. He comes for most of my games there's no such pressure. I think it's 70-30 at the moment. Morning session will be key. We've seen there is moisture in the morning and help for fast bowlers and spinners.

The square leg umpire Chris Gaffaney was standing pretty deep and by the time he could walk to the bowler's end the clock spilled over. So that will be Stumps. India's day!! Jaiswal continued from where he left off today morning scoring his maiden double hundred. However England were disciplined with their bowling and a combination of Anderson Bashir and Rehan Ahmed closed out the Indian innings at 396.

That looked like a just about par score on this deck and England made a good start to their innings. 59 runs added for the first wicket before Duckett was puzzled by some extra bounce. Crawley continued to score a brisk fifty but fell to a superb Shreyas Iyer catch. Then Jasprit Bumrah cut through the middle order like a knife through butter. He made the most of reverse swing dismissing Root with an outswinger Pope with an inswinger and then Stokes with a cutter.

The Indian vice-captain ended with 6/45 as the English middle-order offered little resistance. Skipper Stokes fought back a bit with the tail but England ended up conceding a 143 run lead. India's openers have looked positive with the first five overs at the close of play. It is advantage for the hosts but they found themselves in a similar situation after Day 2 in Hyderabad and nobody needs reminding how that one ended.

Ashwin doesn't seem to be happy about something. He's having a chat with umpire Erasmus as the players walk off. Nevertheless it's been a fascinating first day here at Vizag. England took three wickets in that final session to leave with honours even on a pitch that hasn't offered any great deal of turn so far.

All their bowlers did a fine job starting with James Anderson who maintained great control in all his spells and then the three spinners who were pretty accurate. The star of the day though was Yashasvi Jaiswal as he cruised to an unbeaten 179 at a fair clip showing good balance between defence and attack. He was the only Indian batter to make it big. Many of them got starts but the next highest score after Jaiswal was just 34 from Shubman Gill.
