This instructional video shows how to strengthen the quadratus lumborum muscle, which is located deep in the low back. For a complete guide to low back relief, go to https://goo.gl/l0F5MR
There is a direct correlation between quadratus lumborum pain and trigger points, which are also called 'muscle knots'. These muscle knots can produce a deep aching, and sharp pain in the lower back, and can also travel down to the buttock area and give an aching hip pain. For all our videos on myofascial trigger points, go to Trigger points
Strengthening the quadratus lumborum, sometimes abbreviated to 'QL', can increase the endurance of the muscle, especially if you're sitting all day at work. However, here are a few key points to remember:
Always treat the low back trigger points before starting a strengthening program. These 'muscle knots' need to be relaxed first. Strengthening a knot will only tighten it further. You can easily self treat your trigger points using a trigger point ball, the Muscle Wizard, cane shaped tools, or a foam roller. Once you begin to see some relief, you can either begin stretching or strengthening.
If the strengthening exercises are not providing any more pain relief than you were getting with your self treatments, stop them and go back to the self treatment techniques. You may need to do this a few times before the muscle knots are fully relaxed and strengthening can occur with no pain or discomfort.
