The hardest part of beating Messmer The Impaler is actually having your mimic tear decide to actually attack. Using Impenetrable Thorns makes this much easier as the attack is a ranged attack and if your Mimic Tear does decide to attack with melee the follow up attack will shotgun Messmer causing a massive bleed.
