William James' seventh lecture in his pragmatism lecture series looks at the role of human motivation in what we deem to be true. He cites F.C.S. Schiller as originally formulating his version of humanism, a epistemological philosophy that says that humanity influences our beliefs about reality. Instead of our beliefs being able to perfectly represent reality, human biases and motives make us view that reality within an impartial lens. James uses the historic battle of Waterloo as an example. Even though the facts of the battle may be the same, it symbolizes victory for the English and defeat for the French. Essentially, this version of humanism stresses the importance of our humanity in our beliefs.
