If Trump takes over, America's European allies should prepare themselves for a tough-love approach, as he made it clear that he believes they're just "freeloaders," which is partly true.
But worst of all, Trump has publicly stated that if NATO member countries don't meet defense spending guidelines, he would encourage Russia to do "whatever the hell they want" to them. He also stated that he wouldn't abide by the collective defense clause if he were re-elected.
The former US president claimed that NATO was "busted" before his presidency and that he made it so that everyone paid their fair share.
As a result of these comments, some fear potential changes like the US leaving NATO or abandoning support for Ukraine due to Trump's admiration for Putin.
But there’s still a way Europe can continue enjoying the US' support even if Trump gets re-elected.
NATO wants every member country to spend at least 2% of their money on defense, but most of them aren't hitting that goal, and that's exactly what Trump also wants.
However, currently, apart from Poland and the UK, no other NATO ally is spending the recommended amount. In fact, Poland just recently started spending more on security, seeing how things have been in Ukraine.
European NATO members spend three times more on defense than Russia annually, making them significantly powerful enough to discourage or even defeat Russia.
Trump wants to harness this potential, but disparate opinions on security among Europe's countries have hampered NATO's capacity to form a sound European defense policy.
Europeans don't see eye to eye when it comes to defense; for countries like Poland and Hungary, Russia is a disaster just waiting to happen, but for Italy or Spain, Russia is a distant problem, as they're more focused on controlling illegal immigration.
So getting these countries to help Poland has always been a tough job, and as a result, NATO has always called the USA for support.
Nowadays, some European countries, like Germany and France, have taken Trump’s threats seriously and are planning to fund their defense more, but nothing has been done so far.
