Heavier and bigger than the old BMW M240i, the new car sits on a more sophisticated and refined platform shared with the 3, 5 and 7 Series - but does that make it a better car? Still based around a 3.0-litre turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine, now making 285kW (382 hp), the M240i is ONLY available with xDrive AWD in Australia, but it is rear-biased. A new RWD M240i might be coming later.

Priced at just under $90K before on-road costs, the BMW M240i competes against the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 and Audi RS3 … while there will also be a new BMW M2 coming out soon with an available manual. The M240i is automatic only.

In today’s episode, Chasing Cars road test journalist John Law conducts an independent in-depth review of the 2022 BMW M240i xDrive coupe in Thundernight purple.
