Hazrat Yusuf Qattal died in ad 1527, and his tomb, a small yet very attractive one, was built near the Khirki Masjid. It stands alongside what is today the main Khirki Extension Road. The tomb of Hazrat Yusuf Qattal is in the form of a square twelvepillared chhatri or pavilion. It’s a small, one-room chamber, with the spaces between the pillars filled in with screens of red sandstone carved into a pretty pattern of stars. Red sandstone also forms the chhajja or dripstone below the plastered dome of the tomb. The dome itself has a border of kanguras (stylized motif that resembles battlements but are strictly ornamental), with traces of tilework in deep blue above. In the sixteenth century, when it was built, Sheikh Yusuf Qattal’s tomb would have been a very striking one indeed. Inside the tomb, carving, white marble and calligraphy decorate the mihrab that indicates the direction of prayer, west. Outside the tomb is a small mosque, with three squat arches, its interior decorated with incised plaster. Within the same complex, next to Sheikh Yusuf Qattal’s tomb, is an unusual unidentified tomb of which only six grey quartzite pillars remain; the dome that once topped them has vanished. While medieval tombs in Delhi are invariably square or octagonal, this one is hexagonal, making it somewhat unique. Local villagers come by here sometimes to leave flowers, incense and offerings at the saint’s grave inside the mausoleum; if you should wish to enter it too, remove your shoes outside.
