Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Excel Charts 4 - Too Many Pie Slices.

Welcome back to another episode of the MrExcel netcast, sponsored by Excel-XL. In this chapter of our Excel Charts series, we will be discussing the common issue of having too many pie slices in our charts. While pie charts may look visually appealing with 3 or 4 slices, in real life, there are often products or categories that are not as significant and can clutter the chart. So, let's dive into how we can effectively manage this problem.

To start off, we have a pie chart with 4 important items and a bunch of smaller, less significant items. We can easily change the chart type by selecting the chart and going to the Chart Design tab, then clicking on Change Chart Type. From here, we have the option to choose from 6 different types of pie charts. In this case, we will select either the Pie of Pie or Bar of Pie chart. These options allow us to move some of the smaller slices to a secondary axis, making the chart more manageable.

Once we have selected the Bar of Pie chart, we can right-click on the chart and choose Format Data Series. This gives us control over how the slices are split between the main and secondary axis. We can choose to split them by position, value, or percentage value. In this example, we will split them by value and set the second plot to contain values less than a certain amount. This allows us to focus on the 4 main items in the pie chart and have a separate bar chart for the smaller items.

But that's not all, we can also adjust the pie explosion, gap width, and secondary plot size to further customize our chart. The pie explosion setting controls how much the smaller slices are separated from the main pie, while the gap width determines the spacing between the pies. We can also choose to have the pies together or separate. Just be aware that the pie explosion setting has a bug and will reset to zero if you come back to the dialog box later.

So there you have it, a simple yet effective way to manage too many pie slices in your charts. As always, thank you for tuning in to the MrExcel netcast. We hope this tip will help you create more visually appealing and informative charts. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more Excel tips and tricks. See you next time!
