What to expect from this tutorial? You learn the very basics about bitrate, the recommended Youtube encoder settings for video uploads, what limits your video quality, comparison between different bitrates with different video resolutions, why watch Youtube videos always in the highest resolution and how to choose the best bitrate for you. If you want to stream, you can still learn something about bitrate in this video, but streaming bitrate is not the topic of this video.
YT recommended settings
So, how to choose a bitrate? To see the recommended upload encoding settings from Youtube, you just follow the link in the description to the Google support site. Here is the part with the bitrates. Youtube makes a difference between SDR and HDR content, so keep that in mind. We focus on SDR videos. For a better view let me introduce a brand new tool: The bar graph! Here we have all bitrates for all resolutions. We simply pick a resolution, for example 1080p and if we choose a lower framerates, between 24 and 30, we choose the lower bitrate of 8000 kbps and for higher framerates, between 48 and 60, we choose the higher bitrate of 12000 kbps.
Is that all and we can end this tutorial. Simple answer: Yes, but there are still some things to consider.
Does Youtube supports higher bitrates?
But I have great internet and a million dollar computer, how high can I go? This project have a base canvas of 4K with 60 fps and is rendered with 68 mbps. If I implement my 480p60 testvideo with 68 mbps here, you can see the bitrate clearly. But what happens, if I upload my 480p video directly to youtube. Does it have the bitrate?
No it doesn’t. Like the 720p video which I recorded with a bitrate of 68000 Kbps. Youtube downscale the bitrate.
What bitrate should I use?
Choose your resolution based on your native display resolution, your hardware limits and where your viewer watch your videos. If you just make YT Shorts, your viewers will be mostly mobile users and you can choose a lower resolution.
With the resolution set, you narrow your choices. Follow the recommended bitrates. If you record lower resolutions with higher bitrates, you have to upscale and render them in 4K. That’s not really worth it.
Based on how bitrate and video compression works: If nothing much is going on, like a game of chess, choose the lower bitrate and if more stuff moves in your video, like in Overwatch, choose the higher bitrate.
If your viewers want to watch it in a lower resolution, it is not really your problem, because youtube transcode your video automatically in lower quality. But the reason, why you want to always choose the highest resolution as a viewer is something I call the Resolution / Bitrate entanglement. The higher the resolution, the more bitrate you get as a viewer. You can test that yourself very easily if you have a monitor with a resolution less than 4K and change between your native resolution and 4K in a youtube video. The 4K video looks better, even if you shouldn’t be able to see that. That is just the higher bitrate!
