Yemen’s Houthi militants are using boat drones to blow up cargo ships in the Red Sea, having adapted the tactic that Ukraine used against Russian warships. Video from the deck of the M/V Pumba shows one of the drones in action, tailing the vessel near the Gulf of Aden and trying to hit it. Armed men can be seen on deck watching the drone getting closer. Once they’re sure it is unmanned and it is within range, they open fire with their rifles in an attempt to blow it up. Boat drones are notoriously difficult to shoot, but not for this crew. After just a few moments one man scores a hit, causing the drone to explode. The drone exploded 100ft from the ship and caused no damage. Pumba was attacked a little over a month after M/V Tutor was badly damaged. Videos from that attack shows security barely reacting as the drone approaches. The Houthis had designed it to look like a local fishing boat, and had even put mannequins on the deck to fool the onlookers. With rifles at the ready but not aimed, they watch calmly as the drone drives into the side of their ship. A second video, taken moments after the explosion, captures the aftermath. The crew and their security are hiding inside the bridge, as smoke fills the ship and alarms sound in the background. The captain calls someone to the bridge, as water floods the lower decks. Additional footage, likely taken by the Houthis, shows the size of the explosion. The Tutor was hit twice, once at the stern causing damage to the engine and partial sinking, and again amidships, causing even more damage. Tutor’s crew were forced to abandon ship, with one missing presumed dead, and the ship ultimately sank. The Houthis also published footage they claimed showed an attack on M/V Transworld Navigator a few days later. One video, taken from the top of a boat drone, shows it approaching a cargo ship. Again, there is a large explosion from the rear of the vessel, near the engine. Another video purports to show the same attack from on board the Navigator. Crew watch in horror as the boat approaches and duck behind cover. After a few moments there is a large explosion and the bridge fills with smoke. It is unclear if the drone actually hit the vessel, however. UK Maritime Trade Operations said the captain reported three explosions ’near’ the ship. While the US Joint Maritime Information Centre said the ship suffered no damage. The Houthis also showed off the boat drone used in some of the attacks. Called the Tufan-1, it is similar to the Magura V5 being used by Ukraine. It can be piloted manually or driven remotely, is fast and agile in the water, and packs a large explosive punch. In the video, it can be seen destroying a decoy target vessel with ease. It is not clear exactly how the Houthis were able to create the drone, but Russia likely passed on designs from Ukraine via their mutual ally Iran.
