The cartel death threat scam is one of the scariest scams out there. It doesn't even matter if you visit an escort/massage website, though doing so does increase your chances of being extorted. This scam works in a way where you get a random call or text message from someone claiming that you have wasted one of their escort's time and now you need to pay up or else they are going to come after you and your family. The idea behind this scam is that they are able to get your information from data broker websites and then they target you by providing you with some of the information from those websites like your name, name of your friends or family, address, workplace, etc. which gives them credibility and makes you believe they are going to target you. You are safe. There is no real threat to you. The best thing to give you peace of mind is for you to contact law enforcement and show them the messages you've received.
