We Have Always Existed is a show about transgender history in the ancient Mediterranean. This video is no exception, but the ancients left us more than just history and archaeological remains.

We also have a fair amount of what we might today call fiction. Like modern fiction, the ancient stuff was shaped by, and in turn shaped, the society in which it was created.

Today, we'll be exploring Lucian's work Dialogues Of The Courtesans. In particular, dialogue 5 has some bits that seem pretty transy, but as usual there's quite a bit of nuance.

We'll explore this piece, one of the particular characters, and what it says about the contemporary society in which it was created.

All voices by Sophie Edwards (yes, even that one)

This video was filmed in the territory of the Chippewa of the Thames, the Oneida of the Thames, & the Muncey Delaware nations. I am immensely grateful to the stewards of this land & hope to work toward healing wounds & creating a more equitable world.
