Importance of ASW
The PLA Navy (PLAN) is now the world’s largest navy with a massive fleet of 70+ submarines. At the same time PLAN remains the main security threat for India in Indian Ocean Region. Being the prominent member of QUAD and net security provider in Indian Ocean, India needs to have proper strategy for the sea denial. This is where Anti-Submarine Warfare ASW becomes a priority area for capability enhancement in the coming decade. Indian Navy is rightly and quietly putting its step forward in this direction.
Order for ASW-SWC
Considering the importance of ASW, Indian Navy has ordered for the ASW-SWC corvettes or the anti-submarine warfare vessels from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). In December 2013, Defence Acquisition Council of the Indian Ministry of Defense (MoD) approved the purchase of 16 shallow water anti-submarine vessels at a cost of ₹13,440 crore (US$1.9 billion).  These vessels will replace the Abhay-class corvette currently in service which has entered into the service with Indian Navy in 1989. CSL & GRSE have signed the contract for the construction and supply of ASW-SWCs for Indian Navy in April, 2019. Each of them will be constructing 8 ASW-SWC.
Construction Status
The steel cutting for 1st ASW Shallow Water Crafts from CSL was held On 1st December 2020 and from GRSE was held on On 31 December 2020. As per the latest update Cochin Shipyard has started the steel cutting on fourth and fifth ship on in December, 2021. At present 5 such vessel is under construction at CSL and 3 under GRSE.
Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW-SWCs)
These ASW-SWC will perform subsurface surveillance on coastal waters, coordinate ASW operations with aircraft, and destroy subsurface targets in inland waters. In addition, the vessels shall have the capability to interdict and destroy subsurface targets in coastal waters. These ships can also perform search and rescue operations during both day and night in coastal areas, defend intruding aircraft, and lay mines on the sea bed. The vessels will be armed with torpedoes, rockets and two 12.7 mm machine guns in remote weapon stations. The corvette will have a maximum speed of 25 knots (46 km/h) and range of 1,800 nautical miles (3,300 km) at 14 knots (26 km/h).
