While our friends set out on their journey with Little knife and Yaku, Duncan Heyward arrives at Fort Henry with a regiment, only to discover that Magua and the two girls had never arrived. Munro, still convinced that he can strust Magua, dispatches Duncan to look into the matter. Meanwhile, Little Knife isn’t the least bit happy about the motherly treatment he receives from Alice and Cora, and so decides to part ways with the group, undertaking a solitary journey. He then casually runs into Duncan’s platoon, at which point some of the soldiers, fearing that the boy could be a spy for the Huron tribe, decide to snatch him up. Warned by Yaku, our friends go back to help the boy. Magua then goes to Duncan and persuades the English officer into believing that Alice and Cora had been left in a hideout, thereby leading him into a Huron ambush. Our friends’ intervention fortunately saves Duncan’s life along with a squad of soldiers who’ll make their escape towards Fort Henry. At this point, Munro realizes that Magua has betrayed him, but that his daughters are at least safe.
