SideHill Farm is a small dairy specializing in yogurt. With hungry calves and four cows not suited for the milking parlor, they save time and money by allowing their calves to nurse.

Not many dairies raise their young in this way, preferring bottle or bucket feeding. The calves grow really well and with a watchful eye, there are minimal challenges. Farmers Paul and Amy share the pros and cons of this system.

“We are constantly in the management of our farm looking for ways to save labor while still doing things really well,” says Paul. “It’s about quality and efficiency… We try to do things in a way that is more natural when it’s practical. There’s something about a calf nursing on a cow… The cows and the calf know so well what to do.”
