This entry-level SUV gets a major redesign. Chevy wanted to give the Trax a more athletic look and did so by making it 11 inches longer, 2 inches wider, and lowered the overall height by 4 inches. The profile of the car shows muscular body lines, while the front takes inspiration from Chevy’s current generation Blazer. With about a 6-inch longer wheelbase from the previous generation Trax, that translates to more space on the inside.

The longer wheelbase gives rear seat occupants more legroom for a total of 38.7 inches, the highest in this segment. Chevy claims one of the interior designers of the Trax is over 6 feet tall and wanted to make sure that he himself was comfortable in both rows.

No trim of the new Trax will have rear seat vents, but you’ll be happy to know behind the rear seats there’s 25.6 cu-ft of cargo room which is bigger than the Subaru Crosstrek and Hyundai Venue. And if more space is needed for a fun and adventurous lifestyle, lower the 60/40 split seats for 54 cu-ft.

The cabin has an airy feel to it. The contrasting color on the dash and seats add some flare, and the layout does a great job of combining tech with ease-of-use.

The Trax is propelled by a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder making a GM estimated 137 hp and 162 lb-ft, linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is standard across the lineup, and power is sent to the front wheels, as there is no AWD option. GM claims the new Trax’s 0-60 time has improved by around 1 second from the last generation.

Chevy had the mindset of giving the new Trax some SUV practicality and sedan driving dynamics. It feels composed through windy roads, and makes it relatively easy to make you forget you're in an SUV.

Fuel economy improves from the previous gen with an estimated 28 city/ 32 hwy which is on par with the segment. Chevy Safety assist comes standard, and that includes 6 airbags, forward collision alert, emergency braking, and lane keep assist. Other optional safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Park Assist.

Pricing for Chevrolet’s entry level SUV starts at a competitive $21,495. The base LS trim includes 17 inch wheels with 4-wheel disc brakes, LED headlights, regular cruise control, active noise cancellation, back-up camera, 3.5 inch driver instrument cluster, and 8 inch touchscreen.

Move up the trim ladder for features like 18 or 19 inch wheels, remote start, 11-inch infotainment, 8-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless apple CarPlay and android auto, wireless charging, automatic climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, Power Driver seat, and a sunroof. With the highest trims starting a little under $25k, the Trax presents a compelling value.

Different trims within the Trax lineup give it distinct characteristics. The LS and LT trim being the tamest, while the RS has a sportier design with a unique grille and RS badging, and the Activ trim shows a rugged personality with it’s rear skid plate motif and trim specific black wheels.

Competitors fitting in the entry-level SUV segment include the aforementioned Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Venue, Honda HR-V, and Nissan Kicks. Keep in mind if you’re looking for more of an SUV ride height and available AWD, Chevy’s Trailblazer starts just over $22k.
