Simple Spanish words like “años” can take on a VERY different meaning if you forget to pronounce or write the accent. Don’t let it happen.

Because the Spanish language uses accent marks so frequently, they’re extremely important. There are thousands of words and phrases whose meaning can completely change by adding or subtracting a single accent.

Then there are Spanish words whose meaning differs from country to country. While “concha” is totally safe to say in Mexican Spanish, using it virtually anywhere else in Latin America is sure to get you a puzzled look if not worse.

Of course, the more you practice speaking and writing in Spanish, the more likely you are to be understood and avoid these little embarrassing situations. Details do matter, and getting them down is also sure to add to both your Spanish fluency and comprehension.
