In this compilation video from Castle Arts we show you how to use the graphite pencils, paper blenders and kneadable eraser included in the 40 Piece Drawing Set from Castle Arts.

The video contains seven sections which, with accompanying downloadable tutorial PDFs, have been produced to help you get the most from your graphite pencil range. To download the PDFs, follow the link below to the Castle Arts website and, when prompted, sign-up using your email address to become a member of the Castle Arts Club.

00:00 - Introduction

00:28 - SECTION ONE - Get to know your Pencils

In this section we produce three gargoyle illustrations. The first illustration uses hard grade pencils (5H, 4H, 3H and 2H), the second using medium grade pencils (HB, B, 2B and 3B) and the final illustration using the soft pencils (4B, 5B, 6B and 8B).

You can also download an A4 PDF tutorial which guides you through the techniques used to shade and blend the illustration. The PDF also includes a pencil sketch outline of the gargoyle so you can print out and practice as many times as you like.

11:19 - SECTION TWO - Holding Your Pencil

In this section we show you how to correctly hold a pencil to achieve various effects using the 2B pencil from our 40 Piece Premium Quality Drawing Set.

12:32 - SECTION THREE - Making your mark and blending

In this section we show you how to achieve various pencil shading methods using graphite pencils from our 40 Piece Premium Quality Drawing Set. For these blending examples we use 2B, 4B, 5B and 8B pencils, both blenders and kneadable eraser, all contained in the 40 Piece Set.

19:45 - SECTION FOUR - Line thickness and pressures

In this section we show you different line types and styles. Pencils are capable of much more than just drawing solid lines. You can get a whole range of line thicknesses and effects depending on how firmly you apply the pencil.

21:39 - SECTION FIVE - Control your drawing edges

In this section we present two videos showing how to control your drawing edges. A thin and hard edge gives an object a solid border. Lost edges occur when object and background start to blend together, so edges become undefined. We help you explore all methods and combine them to create interest within your work.

31:25 - SECTION SIX - Composing your drawing

In this section we present a further two videos which aim to help you to compose your drawings.

For effective compositions, try the 70/30 rule — fill 30% of your sketch with the main focus and detail, and the remaining 70% with ‘filler’. This area of seemingly inconsequential ‘filler’ helps to direct attention towards the main subject.
Another way to add interest is to avoid too much symmetry — keeping some elements asymmetrical makes a better composition.

44:03 - SECTION SEVEN - How to draw Bamburgh Castle Example
50:29 - SECTION SEVEN - How to draw a Medusa Example

In these final two videos we show an example producing a tonal drawing of Bamburgh Castle, exploring the values of light, technique and blending. In the second example we produce a Medusa illustration demonstrating a symmetric pencil sketch using 2B and 4B pencils.
