Speaking on the 31st anniversary of the Falklands War, Argentina's president suggested that Britain was using the islands to hide their economic woes.

Speaking on the 31st anniversary of the Falklands War, Mrs Kirchner, speaking in the southern port city of Puerto Madryn, said: "The British government shouldn't use Malvinas to hide the economic and social disaster occurring in Europe."

Mrs Kirchner also accused Britain of "sending warships into Argentine waters" and "militarising the South Atlantic".

"The [British] people deserve a government that tackles the real problems affecting society, not one that distracts from them with ... arms," she said.

Mrs Kirchner repeated her plea for Britain to "fulfil international law" by sitting down to negotiate the sovereignty of the Falklands

"We ask why they refuse to dialogue with a democratic government, but were open to talks with a bloody dictatorship," she said. "It's incomprehensible."

Before Mrs Kirchner's speech the audience, partly made up of war veterans, sang the
March of the Malvinas, a patriotic anthem that asserts Argentine sovereignty over the Falklands.

The Falklands have also turned into a "global fight against colonialism", Mrs Kirchner said.

Argentina's military dictatorship invaded the islands on April 2, 1982, sparking the 74-day conflict with Britain and ultimately leading to a return to democracy.

The conflict claimed the lives of 255 British serviceman, 649 Argentines and three islanders.
