How do capacitor discharge (CD) power packs work? Most outboards utilize this kind of ignition system - from the 70s on- millions of outboards have used this (motorbikes included) - Here I will try my best to give u a clear understanding of how the power packs systems work in layman's terms and how to diagnose a no spark, bad coil, bad trigger or cdi power-pack easily without any special tools - just some logic and simple steps.

This example is a mercury/mariner 3 cylinder style but the same applies to all other outboards.. a 4 cylinder would have an extra pair of studs/wires, a 2 cylinder less- each cylinder would have 2 wires basically.
