Venipuncture is an important part of clinical care, allowing healthcare providers to collect blood to provide vital information about a patient’s health . Performing this skill requires patience and excellent communication especially with nervous patients.

With the right knowledge, experience and preparation, it can be done quickly and safely with minimal pain.

A healthcare provider will insert a needle into the patient's arm or hand, then remove the blood through this opening. The procedure may be uncomfortable but there are techniques, including numbing agents and distractions like music or conversation which can be used to support the patient experience.

This video is a demo how to perform venipuncture on a patient. There are practical considerations and learning opportunities with the following steps: orienting yourself with the patient and their history, preparing the skin for injection, obtaining blood samples for testing, and taking care of the site after withdrawal.
