A few weeks ago, we did a video on colour gamuts and their importance in display technologies. We thought it would be a good idea to follow that up with a quick brush up on colour banding and various bit rates currently available.

Colour banding is a form of posterization in digital images, caused by the colour of each pixel being rounded to the nearest of the digital colour levels. Think of it as rounding off decimal numbers in math problems. While posterization is done for artistic effect, colour banding is an undesired artefact. When colour banding happens the images may appear pixelated and lack detail. This is largely visible in gradients such as sunsets etc.

In 24-bit colour modes, 8 bits per channel is usually considered sufficient to render images. However the eye can see the difference between the colour levels, especially when there is a sharp border between two large areas of the adjacent colour levels.
