How do you leverage your PhD as an entrepreneur?
Did I struggle with using my degree toward my entrepreneurial pursuits? Yeah, I did. At first I just basically tried to hide my degree because I didn't see how it fit into any of my entrepreneurial pursuits. Your degree is very powerful, though. You guys should know that. It's a huge level of credibility, because it shows that you can be dedicated to something for a very long time, and you can operate mentally at a very high level. No matter what you do, that's fine.
I've worked for corporate companies, too. Some of them don't even ask for proof of the degree. If you have the degree they're like, "Great,” but guess what when you're working in business it's very little about anything more than just having that credibility indicator. More-and-more as I've gone forward I've been able to kind of unify the two. I've actually seen it as a differentiator. Having multiple interests is a very good thing. I have the cell biology interest but I also have the business coaching interest, so they play off of each other.
When I'm in the sphere of business coaching I can talk about cell biology and differentiate myself that way. When I'm in the sphere of science and cell biology, I can talk about my business coaching that I do. It adds layers to who I am. It differentiates me. That's how I would suggest using it. If I was in your position, most of your positions, the things I would do is I really would start looking for people in the field that you're in, see what kind of technology, what kind of businesses are popping up in that field, form a partnership with two or three other people in that field and start coming up with ideas for launching a platform. Start building a platform with them, or you could do it yourself, too.
