Cytoplasm
• Cytoplasm is the intracellular material which is present inside the cell and enclosed by the cell membrane, but exception is the nucleus as nucleus is not considered to be the part of cytoplasm.
• Within the cytoplasm there are many organelles. The fluid that is present in between the organelles is called cytosol
Cytoplasm = Intracellular material (Organelles+ Cytosol) – Nucleus
Metabolic pathways occur in cytosol (outside the organelles): -
• Glycolysis (EMP shunt)
• Glycogenolysis
• HMP shunt (PPP shunt)
• Glycogenesis
• Fatty acid synthesis
• Bile acid - Bile salt synthesis
• Cholesterol synthesis (Enzymes of cholesterol synthesis are present in both cytosol and endoplasmic reticulum membrane, but it is mainly synthesized in cytosol).
Cytosol composition differs greatly from that of the extracellular fluid
• Water, dissolved ions, and small molecules (70%)
• Proteins, e.g., enzymes involved in metabolic pathways (30%)
• The major anions of intracellular fluid are proteins and organic phosphates.
• Osmolarity (mOsm/L) of both ECF and ICF is 290
