Indonesian eco-warrior Sadiman has turned barren and arid hills green through his 24-year personal reforestation project. Once called “crazy” by fellow villagers, the 69-year-old has planted at least 11,000 banyan and ficus trees across 250 hectares (617 acres), in the town of Wonogiri in Indonesia’s Central Java province. As a result of his efforts, new water resources have become available in the drought-prone mountainous region.
