Importance of ballscrew pretensioning

Makino has been pretensioning the ballscrews since decades...why? The pretension gives the ballscrew the resistance to changes from environments (thermal growth) and also improves the rigidity. This increases the accuracy of the machine and the life of the ballscrews.
