Present perfect (das Perfekt) in German language uses haben or sein as helping verb and main verb is used in perfect form called Partizip II. Perfect in German language is most frequently used tense to describe a happening which has occured in past. To describe an activity in past most of the conversation uses present perfect in German language instead of past tense. There is a specific sentence structure of present perfect in German language and this perfect sentence structure is explained in lesson 26 of A1 German language course for beginners.
The sentence structure of present perfect in German language is explained below.
1. The first place in German sentence structure is occupied by the subject.
2. At the 2nd position in the German sentence structure we have to select verb haben or sein.
3. At 3rd position there could be preposition, direct object etc.
4. At last position in the German sentence structure of present perfect there will be perfect form of verb. Perfect form of verb is also called partizip II in German language.
The use of haben or sein in German perfect depends on nature of the verb.
For all German reflixive verbs we use haben in German perfect and haben is conjugated according to the subject of sentence.
Similarly all verbs that require an accusative object use haben in German perfect and haben is conjugated according to the subject of sentence.
Verbs which have some movement take verb sein as helping verb in present perfect in German language.
Verbs which have express change of state also take sein as helping verb in present perfect in German language.
There are some expections where there is neither movement in sentence nor change of state but still we use sein in present perfect in German language.
The use of haben or sein in perfect is most challenging part. However, with certain practice the use of haben or sein in German perfect can be mastered. In the 2nd part of lesson 26 of A1 German language course for beginners we will discuss some more examples to make the use of haben or sein in perfect more clear.
