Fire and Fortitude: The U.S. Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943
In popular memory, the Marines fought the ground war in the Pacific. Even today, they are often celebrated as the main victors of the Pacific, a reflection of the well-deserved, hard-earned reputation of the Marine Corps for valor. Yet, in truth, the majority of the fighting and dying in the war against Japan was done not by Marines but by unsung Army soldiers. At peak strength, the Marines mobilized about a quarter million troops in theater. More than 1.8 million Army soldiers served in the Pacific and Asia, the third largest American ground force ever sent overseas to fight a war. And yet this enormous, diverse army has remained relatively anonymous in most World War II histories and public perception of the war. In the early years of World War II, this army evolved from a provincial, undermanned, and often overwhelmed military force into a formidable fighting machine. John C. McManus traces this remarkable story of the Army in the early stages of World War II, from the Philippines to New Guinea and beyond, shedding long-overdue new light on the Pacific War.
