I recently acquired a 1971
I recently acquired a 1971 Browning BLR in .308. After inspecting and cleaning the bore and chamber, I took it to the range.
The first shot fired fine. When I went to take the second shot, I heard the hammer fall but there was no boom. I looked the gun over and noticed that the firing pin was stuck in the forward position and the spring had not caused it to return to be hit again.
When I got home I attempted to free the pin with compressed air and brake cleaner without success. I dropped a 1/16" drill bit into the front firing pin hole and tried to push the pin back while holding the drill bit with a vice grip..no success. At that point I put a SPENT SHELL CASING (do not use a live shell under any circumstances) in the chamber, placed the 1/16" drill bit in the firing pin hole and slowly pulled back on the lever, effectively pressing the pin to the rear. I pushed the firing pin from the rear by hand and it stuck again.
I suspected I did not have any broken components, rather, 45 years of little use had allowed accumulated oil, gun case lint and varnish to impede the spring and firing pin function.
I pushed the firing pin and shot brake cleaner on the back of the pin, letting it pool and soak through. I then pushed the firing pin back and forth as described above. When the firing pin was moving freely, I shot brake cleaner in from the front firing pin hole and caught the blackish liquid that came out the back with a paper towel. I leaned the gun in the corner and over the next few hours I occasionally held a paper towel to the back of the firing pin and pushed it in by hand and let return until no more liquid was seeping out onto the towel.
This techniques appears to have resolved my problem. I hope this video helps you get your old BLR back in action.
