On 22 January 1879, a British army in South Africa was destroyed by Zulu warriors at the Battle of Isandlwana. Close by, the single company of the 24th Regiment stationed in the isolated outpost at Rorke’s Drift seemingly awaited the same fate. Nevertheless, against incredible odds, these 150 soldiers managed to defend their position against over 3000 Zulu warriors. Using drone and video footage, 3D mapping technology, satellite data, contemporary photographs and accounts by participants, this tour will break down these misconceptions to demonstrate what actually happened during the battle. Dr Dighton’s close examination of the engagement shows how the heroism of several key individuals directly shaped the course of the fighting. By highlighting these vital turning points in the action, this tour reveals why the Zulu force was repulsed and the British soldiers were able to win their desperate struggle for survival.
