Over the last 5 years, prime minister Manasseh Sogavare has brought the Solomon Islands closer to China. In September 2019, just months after taking over, Sogavare decided to stop recognising Taiwan, and instead ally with China. In 2022, Sogavare singed a secret security pact with China, the details of which still haven't been made public. Last week's elections were seen as a referendum on Sogavare's pro-China policies. The people delivered a mixed verdict. Sogavare barely held on to his constituency. His party emerged as the largest after elections, but it does not have the numbers to form the next government yet.
