In friction stud welding a round stud is rotated and pressed against a sheet or plate. The process can be used for joining dissimilar materials, e.g. joining a steel earthing pin to an aluminium car body. For welding small diameter studs to thin sheets, small friction stud welding machines can be fitted to a robot.
