My wife's 1977 Datsun 280Z has been unhappy lately. Normally this is a super reliable little car, but it's well over 40 years old and not everything lasts that long. We had a problem years ago where the fuel pressure regulator went out and blew several of the old, rotting gas lines. I replaced the regulator and most of the lines at that time. I intended to replace them all since the rubber was starting to crack from age, but when I looked into what was required to do the little stubs on the fuel injectors themselves I got intimidated and just left them be.

Well, now those old little stub hoses are finally starting to give up. The number six injector is actively leaking and the rest look to not be far behind, so it's time to finally bite the bullet and get it done.

This isn't an especially easy service, but it was perfectly manageable. The trickiest parts were removing the fuel rails and getting the hoses off the injectors themselves without damaging the barb fitting (if you want to re-use them). Also, as long as I had everything apart, I went ahead and cleaned each injector by rigging up a little test bench and spraying carb cleaner through each one.

At the end of the day I got it all done and the good 'ol 280Z is running great again. I've got a few tips for getting the stub hoses off without damaging the barbs and for setting up the test bench. If there's a trick for getting fuel rails on and off without curse words, I don't know it, so you're on your own there.
