Good news for Kaohsiung residents. The Red Line of the city’s MRT is being extended, and one of the new stations, Gangshan, opened to the public on Sunday. President Lai Ching-te and other local officials attended the opening ceremony, and took a ride on the maiden voyage from the new station. Lai praised Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai for his work on the city’s transportation infrastructure, and said that future developments would usher in lots of benefits for local industries.

Gangshan Station on the Kaohsiung MRT’s Red Line opened to the public on Sunday, and President Lai Ching-te was on hand for the opening. Lai was joined by Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, as well as eight local lawmakers, who together took part in a ceremony before riding an MRT train from the station.

Mayor Chen Chi-mai has applied national standards in building his city’s infrastructure, and the city has greatly improved under his leadership. Just in terms of transportation alone, the city’s circular light-rail line was completed and started operation in January this year. Now today, the system’s Red Line has been extended northward with the opening of Gangshan Station, which has also now begun operation.

The newly opened station extends the Kaohsiung MRT Red Line northward by 1.46 kilometers from the previous terminal station, Gangshan South Station. The extension is expected to make travel into the city center more convenient for those living in Gangshan District.

The Kaohsiung MRT’s Red Line extension project, which is to take the line northward into the city’s Luzhu District, will add 13.08 kilometers to the line when finished. Seven more stations are planned, which will add access to Benjhou Industrial Park, Kaohsiung Science Park, and a university, among other stops. The city says the line may even be extended to the renowned Chi Mei Museum in the future, bringing Kaohsiung and neighboring Tainan closer together.

As you can see now Kaohsiung, Qiaotou, Nanzi, and Gangshan are all linked up. I don’t know if the transportation ministry has heard what Mayor Chen has said, but if the line can connect with Tainan, that would link up various industries. That would double the benefits of the line.

The budget for the extension of the Kaohsiung MRT’s Red Line was approved by Lai when he premier. Now as president, Lai is witnessing the project take shape. Lai thanked former Mayor Chen Chu and Mayor Chen Chi-mai, saying their persistence and execution led to remarkable improvements to Kaohsiung’s transportation infrastructure.
