Medieval France 5: The Century of St. Louis, the Lesser Crusades and the end of the Capetians

The rest of the crusades from the fourth were a total nonsense in its majority, none served much. In the 4th the crusaders destroyed Constantinople and divided the Byzantine Empire into the Latin Empire and the Empire of Nicaea.

In the medieval France of Philip Augustus began the hostilities against the Plantagenet, who had occupied half of France due to the marriage with Eleanor of Aquitaine. Richard Lionheart had died and Juan sin Tierra saw Felipe II take away Normandy, Maine, Anjou, Tourene and Poitou after the Battle of Bouvines in 1214.

Then came the crusade against the Cathars in the south of France, called Albigensian, and in 1212 it is said that there was a crusade of children although it is not proven. The 5th and 6th crusades did not have French support, although the second managed to recover Jerusalem, although it did not last long.

Saint Louis, or Louis IX of France, was one of the greatest kings capetians. Paris was amazed, the Holy Chapel was built, and hundreds of Gothic churches everywhere. Also continued the war against England, the War of Saintonge (1242), which left the English with less counties in France.

Saint Louis got into two crusades. In the 7th he was imprisoned after the Battle of Mansurah, and in the 8th he was killed by the plague in Tunisia. His brother, Carlos de Anjou, ended up as king of Sicily and Naples, but that's another story.

The last great king capeto was Philip IV the Fair, that tried to recover Guyenne to the English. He also had a row with Flanders after the Matins of Bruges (1302) and with Pope Boniface VIII in the outrage of Anagni. The Order of the Temple, the Templars, was finished, and before this king died the scandal of the Tower of Nesle occurred. His sons fought for power and that ended the Valois dynasty in power in France.
