Warm Audio WA87 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone Review / Test

Today in the Audio Hotline studio I am testing out the Warm Audio WA87! This is Multi-Pattern Condenser mic. It is capable of switching between 3 polar patterns: Cardioid, Omnidirectional and Bidirectional. I have previously used this mic in a studio situation (recording an album), but it has been a while and I have had my eye on it ever since! A big thank you to B&H for helping me get my hands on one! However, even though B&H sent this to me, they are not asking me to review it a certain way. MY OPINION IS MY OWN.
A big reason this microphone tends to have quite a bit of attention is because of its name having “87” in it. The Neumann U87 is a classic, and extremely popular, microphone. So anytime a mic has the number 87 in the title people can’t help but wonder if it could possibly emulate the great Neumann U87. Warm Audio does clone quite a bit of popular equipment and sells those clones at an affordable price. So this is essentially their U87 clone. But coming in at rough 17% the cost of the U87… it makes you wonder if it could even come close to sounding like the U87.
Focus on this mic being good enough for its price category, rather than it somehow sounding identical to a microphone 83% more expensive than it.
Be sure to check out the testing and audio samples and see if this is right for you! Every person has different expectations of audio gear. If the features are what you need, and you like the sound, then it is right for you!
