5. SOUNDBITE (English) Ned Heywood, blue plaque maker:
"A lot of the names are no longer just English names, which is significant and good because, you know, the people who've come to this country, have been in this country from all over the world, have made a disproportionately large contribution to particularly to science and technology and equally, a lot of the names are female rather than male. Whereas 30 or 40 years ago, you would remark on it if you saw a woman's name on a blue plaque. It's changing now, which is very much for the good."
6. Various of Julia Land, assistant at Heywood's workshop, putting letters on blue plaque

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Ned Heywood, blue plaque maker:
"We made plaque 1000 and we probably made several from 950 onwards. But other potters stretching right back 160 years have made the other plaques and most of them are still there and most of them look great, because they're made of ceramic, which is a material which is permanent. Once it's fired, it can get damaged physically, but it'll never deteriorate. The surface will always look good, the color will always be the same and it's a great way of marking history because it is so permanent."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Ned Heywood, blue plaque maker:
"We are, in our own tiny way, part of history, and we're marking history and we're making people aware of history and they will appreciate the people that have done significant things within the community."

15.SOUNDBITE (English) Diana Yeh, senior lecturer in sociology at City, University of London:
"I really think it's really very important for English Heritage and heritage industry more widely to be able to think about the much more troubling aspects of English history, colonial history, slavery and to be able to have genuinely difficult conversations around those topics perhaps harder. It’s very, in a way, easy to celebrate well-known figures who are marginalized, but it’s much harder to do that difficult work of acknowledging Britain’s difficult past. But this needs to be done for the benefit of future generations.”

STORYLINE:
A resounding thump breaks the silence as Julia Land drops a lump of grey-brown clay onto the slab roller before Ned Heywood cranks it through the machine once, twice, three times, creating a rectangle about an inch thick.

Laying a pattern on top of the slab, Heywood slices through the clay to create a disc the size of an extra-large pizza that will become one of the blue plaques that dot the walls of buildings throughout London, marking the places where scientists, artists, politicians and activists have made history.

As English Heritage prepares to unveil its 1,000th blue plaque on Tuesday, the charity is working to broaden the program to include more women, people from minority ethnic backgrounds and community groups so that it better reflects the diversity of the capital.
