The Lebanese Civil war between right-wing Maronite Christians and left-wing Moslems has reached its climax with the Moslems now in control of most of Beirut and the surrounding countryside. The Christians, pinned down in an enclave may now form a breakaway state. This report shows some of the vicious street battles in the strategic hotel district of Beirut, the war in the hills and examines the roles of the leading military and diplomatic protagonists.
