Quince is not a common orchard tree here in the UK. It's rare to find a mature example of these very beautiful ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. I have not really been able to find out why you don't find them in old orchards or walled gardens?
There are quite a few varieties available commercially for gardeners and some nurseries even suggest growing in pots, but most take 5-6 years before they start fruiting, and if this example is normal for the genus, they would need a substantial size pot to support the structure and weight of fruit. They are self-fertile, so you only need one tree.
The habit is slow growing and naturally arching into a full weeping habit over time, helped by the massive size and weight of the fruit, with very little pruning being required.
The large flowers in spring are worth planting this small tree for alone, and I like the foliage, but from late August the colour starts showing in the fruits and this is when the whole tree shines from a distance in the autumn sunshine.
As the fruits ripen the colour darkens and the aroma develops, the advice to leave them on the tree for as long as possible and into mid-October if frosts permit, will reduce the length of cooking time required to render the fruit edible, as these can not be eaten without cooking.
